North Carolina ACA cancellations: what is known and what to check

The September 29, 2026, Carolina Public Press report says CMS announced 760,000 ACA Marketplace coverage cancellations nationwide. It does not establish how many North Carolina residents were affected. If you are concerned about your plan, check your own notices and confirm your coverage status rather than assuming the headline applies to you.

What the report establishes—and what remains unknown

Carolina Public Press reports that the cancellations followed a federal anti-fraud investigation. According to a CMS spokesperson cited in the story, the canceled enrollments involved agent or broker assistance and were missing identifying information, such as a Social Security number or immigration document number.

CMS did not provide the publication with a North Carolina cancellation count. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said it did not know the extent of the state's coverage losses and does not track or manage ACA Marketplace enrollment. The NC Navigator Consortium also reported having limited information.

The report does not resolve whether every canceled enrollment was fraudulent. Health insurance expert Louise Norris raised the possibility that legitimate enrollees could have been removed improperly, but the story does not establish how many such cases occurred. Neither the nationwide total nor the state's overall enrollment figures answer that question.

Check your notices and confirm your coverage

For North Carolina individuals and families concerned about a possible cancellation, the practical next step is to establish what happened to their own coverage:

  • Review any Marketplace or insurer notices you received. Look for the stated reason for the action, any requested information, and any dates listed.
  • Ask the Marketplace and your insurer whether your coverage is currently active and whether a cancellation took effect.
  • If a notice includes a response deadline or appeal instructions, follow those instructions. Ask the Marketplace to clarify anything you do not understand rather than guessing which deadline applies.
  • Keep your notices and copies of anything you submit together so you can refer to them when asking about your case.

The report cites a CMS spokesperson advising people who were improperly removed to contact the Marketplace Call Center and provide their Social Security number or immigration document number for reinstatement. If you believe the cancellation was a mistake, explain that concern and ask what information is needed to review your case. Do not assume coverage has been restored without confirming its status.

Do not confuse a notice deadline with Open Enrollment

HealthCare.gov lists November 1, 2026, as the start of Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage and January 15, 2027, as its end. Those enrollment dates are not a substitute for responding to a cancellation notice. Do not wait for Open Enrollment to ask about your current coverage or address instructions in a notice.

Does this mean every North Carolina Marketplace plan is being canceled?

No. The report concerns cancellations tied to a federal investigation, not the cancellation of everyone's Marketplace coverage. It leaves the North Carolina count unresolved and cannot tell you whether your individual enrollment was affected.
